Barretts studio The Tooting Tribe is based in Christchurch (NZ) at The Piano, 156 Armagh st, and also available Online.

He teaches Trumpet at University of Canterbury, and various schools around the Canterbury region. Previously Barrett has been an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University, Wellington. 

Graduating with a Masters Degree in Performance Trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music, London Barrett is qualified with a LRAM (Licentiate to the Royal Academy of Music in Brass Specific Teaching) to guide students through graded examinations, including Trinity Collage, ABRSM and NCEA. Barrett is a skilled and experienced musician with many ensembles, styles and experience to his credit.

Barrett is Yamaha Artist Endorsee, and he performs regularly for the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and around the globe with double platinum selling group The Black Seeds. Barrett is also Principal Trumpet of Orchestra Wellington.

As a versatile musician, Barrett has traveled around the world performing trumpet in many countries in a range of settings and genres. Some of the influential artists he has played with include: Sir Colin Davis, James Judd, Sir Mark Elder and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jack Johnson, Simon O’Neill, Dave Dobbyn, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, New London Orchestra, London Arts Orchestra, the Royal Academy Early Music Ensemble, Manson Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, National Brass Band (NZ), NZ Army Band, Central Band of the Royal NZ Airforce, Reinhold Friedrich, Gerard Presencer and Fly my Pretties.

Studies

Prior to his study for his Masters in Classical Performance Trumpet in London, Barrett completed a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trumpet and gained an Honours degree in Classical Trumpet from the New Zealand School of Music, Wellington.

He is one of the most prolific brass players to have emerged from New Zealand in recent years. From a musical family with strong brass connections, he gave his first concert at the young age of seven in the Timaru community school band.

While studying in the United Kingdom Barrett’s teachers included:

Mark David (Philharmonia Orchestra, Academy of St Martin in the Fields) 

Bob Farley (Harry Christophers and The Sixteen) 

James Watson (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Royal Opera)  

Rod Franks (London Symphony Orchestra).

Prizes & Awards

Barrett performed on The Black Seeds album “Dust and Dirt” which received a Vodafone Music Award for Best Roots album.

A duo with Czechoslovakian Organist Nikolia Eckertova gained first place in the Royal Academy of Music’s United Music Publishers Performance Prize

Various Titles in the Solo and Group competitions in the National Brass Band Championships, including Junior Champion of Champions two years running, and a member of the winning A Grade band for three consecutive years.

Selected for three National Bass Bands of New Zealand and performing at the prestigious British Open Championships in the United Kingdom on two occasions with Woolston Brass and Dalewool Auckland Brass.
